Milmyeon on Geoje Island — Woomyeonga

Found a great noodle place on Geoje Island (south coast of Korea) called Woomyeonga. This one was seriously good.

Mul-milmyeon

What is milmyeon? Milmyeon (밀면) is a chilled wheat-noodle soup from the Busan/Gyeongsang region — a southern cousin of the famous naengmyeon, but made with wheat flour instead of buckwheat, so the noodles come out bouncier and smoother. Perfect summer food.

Milmyeon with toppings

I had the mul-milmyeon (물밀면, “water” version with icy broth). The broth is clear but surprisingly rich, topped with cucumber, sliced pork, and half a boiled egg.

Extra broth and dadaegi

They serve extra broth and dadaegi (다대기 — spicy seasoning paste) on the side, so you tune the bowl yourself: stir in dadaegi to bring the heat up, pour broth to cool it back down. Great system.

If you ever drive around Geoje Island in summer, a bowl of milmyeon is the move.

Prices: mul-milmyeon ₩8,500 (about $6), bibim-milmyeon ₩9,000, beef haejang-guk ₩12,000, steamed dumplings ₩7,000. Haejangguk (해장국) literally means “soup to chase away a hangover” — a milmyeon place also serving one is a practical combination.

It sits in central Geoje (the Gohyeon/Sangdong area), which makes it easy to fold into a day of driving around the island.
